For as long as I can remember, I longed for a devoted relationship. A love that felt deep, true and safe. A man I could melt with, merge with, become One with.
But what I didn’t know back then…is that Sacred Union doesn’t begin with another person.
It begins inside of you.
Before you can meet a partner in depth, devotion and truth, you need to learn how to meet yourself.
To be present with your emotions instead of abandoning them.
To hold yourself through fear and uncertainty.
To lead yourself with clarity.
To trust your own inner knowing.
These are the steady, grounded qualities of the inner masculine.
And equally, you need to be able
To soften.
To receive.
To rest in your own tenderness.
To let love in. Starting with love for yourself.
These are the intuitive, flowing qualities of the inner feminine.
When these parts within you come into harmony…
inner union is born.
This truth revealed itself to me during one of the most vulnerable chapters of my life.
When our daughter was two, Wouter and I separated for a year.
The challenges we were facing in partnership and parenthood were too big for us at that moment. He said he couldn’t stay in a relationship with me.
And suddenly I was alone with a child
and with fears I had carried for so long:
“You can’t do this alone.”
“You’re not lovable.”
In the beginning I felt terrified, deeply sad and lonely. But at some point I realised there was no way around the pain — only through it.
I had to face my biggest fears. Feel them all the way through.
It became the beginning of a different kind of love story. One with myself.
Learning to hold my own heart.
Learning to trust my strength.
Learning to soften into my own arms.
Learning that I was whole , not because someone stayed,
but because I finally stayed with myself.
It was only from this place of wholeness,
not needing anything from him,
that our paths naturally found each other again.
Everything felt different this time. Not because we had changed the relationship,
but because we had each changed the relationship with ourselves.
That’s the ground of Sacred Union:
two Whole beings meeting in Truth.
